The value of each pip is calculated based on the number shown to you; in other words, each 1-pip price movement results in exactly the amount of profit or loss displayed for you.
Using Forex calculators enables more accurate money management and reduces the influence of emotions. One of the most important factors in capital risk management and selecting an optimal trade size is pip value in trading.
By calculating pip value accurately:
Now that you have calculated the pip value of price movement,
you can enter real-market trades with more confidence and an appropriate volume.
A pip is the main unit for measuring price changes in the Forex market.
In most currency pairs, one pip equals a 0.0001 change in price.
A pipette is one-tenth of a pip and is used to show price movements more precisely.
Simply put, 10 pipettes equal 1 pip.
Example:
If the EUR/USD price moves from 1.61600 to 1.61650:
The price has increased by 5 pips (or 50 pipettes).
Knowing the difference between a pip and a pipette, and the dollar value of each, helps you calculate trading profit and loss more accurately and better understand the symbol’s volatility range.
The value of each pip depends on three factors:
The symbol’s contract size
Trade volume
Account currency
Example:
In EUR/USD, when you trade 1 standard lot, one pip is worth approximately $1.
In gold (XAU/USD), the contract size is usually 100 ounces.
Therefore, with 1 standard lot, each pip is worth about $1.
Example:
A 10-pip price move with a 1-lot position results in about $10 in profit or loss.
In the Dow Jones index (US30), the pip value varies by contract type and broker; at Aron Groups, the Dow Jones contract size is 10. This means the pip value with 1 lot equals $1. The Pip Value Calculator calculates the exact value of each pip based on the live market price, saving you from manual calculations and wasted time.
The CFD contract size for Bitcoin at Aron Groups broker is equal to 1 Bitcoin. If you enter a trade with 1 standard lot, each $1 change in Bitcoin’s price changes your profit or loss by the same amount.
In MetaTrader 4 and 5, each symbol has a different number of decimal places, which makes contract sizes vary across symbols.
In 5-digit symbols, the pip is the 4th decimal place.
In 3-digit symbols, such as USD/JPY, the pip is the 2nd decimal place.
Note that these are fully conventional; for example, in gold, 1 pip equals a $0.01 price movement.
1. Select the Crosshair tool from the top bar in MetaTrader.
2. Click the starting point of the price move and draw the line to the ending point of the move.
This tool shows the following at the same time:
Price change percentage
Number of recorded candles
Number of points (each 1 point equals 1 pipette)
To calculate the number of pips, simply remove the last digit of the points number, because in most symbols, every 10 points equals 1 pip.
In TradingView, simply select the Ruler tool and measure the price movement from the start to the end point. By calculating pips accurately and entering them into the Pip Value Calculator, you can measure the potential profit or loss with higher accuracy.
